The investigation of the physical properties of the ground are a major part of earth sciences – and therefore of geophysics. The applications of engineering geophysics are various: they permit the assessment and description of the soil for construction and thus ensure stability of the building, as well as borehole surveys and monitoring of slope movements. Geophysical methods are employed in all these applications. Underground constructions such as tunnels require further investigations e.g. exploration ahead of the tunnel face in order to optimise drilling progress.
